Insights from the PEWIN “Secondaries Take Center Stage” panel

Monument Group Partner Christine Patrinos recently joined a PEWIN panel, “Secondaries Take Center Stage: Do You Have the Edge?”, alongside industry veterans representing the buyside, sellside and legal perspectives. The discussion explored the rapid evolution of the private equity secondary market from a tactical opportunity set to a core portfolio strategy. Panelists examined how LP-led transactions are increasingly being used as deliberate portfolio allocation tools, the growing complexity of GP-led deals, and the implications of market dynamics, liquidity needs and ongoing innovation for the future of this increasingly important asset class.

Key predictions from the panel:

  • The secondary market is still in the early innings and poised for significant growth
Many LPs have never sold a position on the secondary market and are exploring their first sale processes. The continuation vehicle (CV) market also remains underpenetrated, with a large proportion of GPs yet to execute a CV transaction. Relative to the total capital invested across private markets, secondary transaction volumes remain modest, highlighting substantial runway for growth across all structures.
  • The mid- and lower mid-market will be a major growth engine
For years, many investors lacked the resources, scale, or internal infrastructure to seriously evaluate CVs. That is changing. These investors are increasingly building dedicated capabilities and seeking external advice to participate in the market. Given the substantial capital raised by mid-market private equity firms over the past decade, this segment represents a significant and expanding opportunity for secondaries.
  • The GP-led market will become significantly more specialized
Just as buyouts evolved from a broad asset class into a highly specialized one – with sector-focused funds and differentiated market positions – GP-led offerings are expected to follow the same path with more sector specific focus. Early signs are already visible, with certain GPs forming single-platform, sector specific CVs. That specialization is set to deepen.
  • Watch the capital supply/demand dynamic closely
The expansion of secondaries markets as a portfolio management tool for both GPs and LPs is attractive.  For GPs, LPs and advisers operating in this market, monitoring the market dynamics will be essential as the industry navigates its next phase of growth.

The common thread across all predictions is growth. What was once viewed as a niche corner of private markets is rapidly becoming a mainstream portfolio management tool. For investors seeking flexibility, liquidity and exposure to high-quality assets, the opportunity set is likely to expand significantly in the years ahead.
